(ANSA) – LISBONA, 02 AGO – After a reception given on Friday evening in the presence of the Italian Ambassador to Portugal, Claudio Miscia, and a delegation from the Portuguese Navy, the Italian Navy’s multirole amphibious ship Trieste opens its hatches this Saturday to the public.
It is the largest ship commissioned in Italy since the end of World War II; built by Fincantieri and Leonardo at the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard, with final outfitting at the Muggiano shipyard and launched on May 25, 2019. Officially handed over to the Italian Navy on Dec. 7, 2024 during a solemn ceremony attended by President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, ITS Trieste is the flagship of the Italian Amphibious Operations Group and is a landing helicopter carrier that combines advanced technologies for amphibious operations, logistical support, air missions and humanitarian interventions.
It arrives in Lisbon after departing on July 21 with 146 cadets on board, whose training campaign this year has been modified due to the unavailability of the Amerigo Vespucci, which is currently undergoing major maintenance work after its recent round-the-world voyage. Among them are six international cadets from Libya, Azerbaijan, Tunisia and Djibouti.
The Trieste will leave the port of Lisbon on Sunday, August 3.
