(ANSA) – ROMA, 29 LUG – Two Canadair aircraft of the Italian Civil Protection arrived in Greece on Sunday evening with a team of fourteen operators including pilots, technicians and coordination personnel from the National Fire Department and the Civil Protection Department in response to a request for assistance from the Hellenic authorities issued through the European Civil Protection Mechanism.
Italian aircraft have from the outset been operating alongside Greek emergency vehicles in various regions of the country. Following the prolonged absence of rain and temperatures that exceeded 40 degrees for several consecutive days last week, Greece has in fact faced an intense wave of forest fires in recent days, forcing local authorities to evacuate many residents and tourists.
For Italy’s Ambassador to Athens Paolo Cuculi, who visited the Italian crews this morning, “in addition to an important contribution in containing and extinguishing numerous fires, the intervention of our Canadairs confirmed the traditional solidarity that binds Italy to Greece and the common commitment to addressing the challenges posed by climate change, registering gratitude from the Greek government and the Greek public.”
