(ANSA) – ROMA, 20 LUG – Work continues on the presentation to Qatar of the Mattei Plan-the Italian government’s strategic plan for Africa-structured on the occasion of the Emir’s state visit in October 2024 with agreements signed, and continuing to move forward into 2025.
Indeed, in the talks held in Rome on the sidelines of the Ukraine Reconstruction Conference (July 10-11), dialogue with Qatar also advanced regarding the Mattei Plan for Africa, a plan of national interest launched by the Italian government with the aim of imparting a paradigm shift in relations with the African continent and building partnerships on an equal basis, overcoming donor-beneficiary logic and generating mutual benefits and opportunities.
Connected to the Mattei Plan is the Rome Process, an initiative launched by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani that aims to strengthen cooperation with African countries, including in the area of migration, which is also at Qatar’s attention.
The talks in Rome were attended on the Qatari side by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan al Muraikhi who met with Deputy Minister Edmondo Cirielli and Minister of State for International Cooperation Maryam Al Misnad who met with Undersecretary Maria Tripodi.
As a follow-up, Italy’s ambassador to Qatar, Paolo Toschi, met today in Doha with the Director General of the Qatar Fund for Development, Qatar’s cooperation arm, to advance discussions on projects of common interest. Dialogue also continues with Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund Qia, aimed at examining hypotheses of interest.
Within the framework of the Italy-Qatar Strategic Dialogue, the Mattei Plan and the Rome Process are among the top priorities.
