(ANSA) – OSAKA, 09 AGO – The city of Nagasaki commemorates 80 years since the horror of the atomic bomb dropped on Aug. 9, 1945, by the United States. A minute’s silence was observed in the Japanese city at 11:02 a.m. local time (4:02 a.m. in Italy) inside the Peace Park. The memorial event was attended by 94 countries and regions. Also representing Italy was the consul general of Italy in Osaka, Filippo Manara.
“With our presence, on Aug. 6 in Hiroshima and today at the Nagasaki ceremony, together with so many other members of the diplomatic corps, we wanted to offer Italy’s strong closeness to our friend the Japanese people in commemorating this tragic anniversary,” said the Italian consul.
Manara stressed “the emotion” felt during the testimony of Hibakusha Hiroshi Noshioka, who “recounted in detail not only the devastation on the day of the explosion, but the deep scars, physical and mental, that for decades marked his life and that of an entire people.” His words, however, “are also full of hope,” added the consul of Italy in Osaka, recalling “the Hibakusha’s commitment against the proliferation of nuclear weapons, which in 2024 earned the Nihon Hidankyo Association the Nobel Peace Prize.” An effort that “deserves the unwavering support of every individual who cares about the future of humankind. “His words resonated as a warning to the international community: ‘We must never again make use of atomic weapons. If we do, everything will end,'” concluded Consul Manara.
