(ANSA) – ROME, AUG 8 – Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi said Friday that he may not defend his high-jump title at next month’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo due to his poor form.
“I have to figure out if it makes sense to speed things up to be ready for the world championships or to take some time to recover for the next three seasons leading to Los Angeles Olympics,” the Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist told ANSA via telephone.
He said the fact he only jumped 2.12 metres at the recent Italian championships was “shocking and destabilizing” and he would assess the situation on the basis of how he does at Heilbronn, Germany, on Sunday.
“It’s mostly a test with myself, because if my best jump is between 2.10 and 2.20, there will be food for thought,” he said.
