(ANSA) – ROME, AUG 12 – Italy has written to the EU and rejected criticism of its special ‘golden’ powers that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni used in the UniCredit-Banco BPM deal, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg Tuesday.
“The Commission will now evaluate Italy’s response and consider next steps,” spokesperson Lea Zuber told Bloomberg.
In July, Brussels sent Italy a preliminary opinion raising doubts about its compatibility with EU law, opening the door to potential formal litigation.
